The Golden Ratio: 1.609

Here is the number you need to lock into your brain: 1.6.

  • 1 MPH = 1.609 KPH
  • 1 KPH = 0.621 MPH

This means that kilometers are "shorter" than miles. If you see a speed limit of 100, it is much faster if it is in MPH than if it is in KPH.

Quick Mental Math Tricks

You can't pull out a calculator while driving! Here are two tricks to convert KPH to MPH in your head:

Trick 1: The "Half plus 10%"

To go from KPH to MPH (roughly):
1. Take the KPH number and cut it in half.
2. Add 10% of the original number.
Example: 100 KPH.
Half is 50.
10% of 100 is 10.
50 + 10 = 60 MPH. (Actual is 62 MPH. Close enough!)

Trick 2: The Fibonacci Sequence

Believe it or not, the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...) works for miles and kilometers because the ratio is close to 1.6!
